When the new College Football Playoff rankings come out tonight, LSU could leapfrog Ohio State to number one after a big win in Tuscaloosa.

Many Tigers fans were shocked to see Ohio State take the top position last week, despite LSU’s record against top ten teams. CBSSports.com college football analyst Jerry Palm says the Tigers clearly proved a point.

“Obviously that is a high-quality win to add to their resume while Ohio State was beating up on what was left of Maryland, so it was kind of a coin flip last week, but I think it goes LSU’s way this week,” says Palm.

Ohio State is undefeated with a number of blowout wins, but unlike LSU, they have no victories against Top 10 opponents.

Alabama meanwhile takes its only loss of the season against what will likely be it’s only Top Ten ranked team of the year.  Palm expects them to fall out of the race for a playoff spot this week.

“They still have a chance to end up there on December 8th, this is just a snapshot in time with a month to go, but I think that Georgia ends up just slightly ahead this week,” Palm said.

LSU could probably make the playoffs even if they lose another game this year, but Palm says there is a lot of incentive for the Tigers to keep the pedal to the floor.

“The number one seed gets regional consideration, the semifinal games this year are the Peach Bowl and the Fiesta Bowl, and if LSU is the number one seed then they get to play in Atlanta instead of Phoenix,” says Palm.
