Louisiana motorists are enjoying an unusual treat for June, with gas prices actually dropping.

Even the the folks at Triple-A are somewhat surprised..

"We're looking at a statewide average in Louisiana right now of about $2.35 for a gallon of regular gas. That's almost 30 cents cheaper than we were last year when we were looking at $2.63 a gallon.

Spokesman Don Redman says the auto club did not expect to see this in June.

"We were looking at some of the earlier factors and thought that we would be, maybe within 10 cents of where we were this time last year. Certainly, we didn't expect a 30 cent break...30 cents cheaper."

But, he says crude is down to about $53 a barrel now, there's a surplus in inventory, and the transition to the summer blend gasoline is complete.

The decrease in the price is being seen nationwide, but it's most notable in our area.

"Compared to the rest of the nation, we've been having some of the best prices in the country here on the Gulf Coast," says Redman.

He says, barring a hurricane in the Gulf, prices should hold steady through the summer, maybe even drop a bit further.
