(WWL.com) - Music’s biggest night takes place this weekend as the 61st Grammy Awards takes place in Los Angeles.  Many Louisiana artists have been nominated throughout the years and this year is no different.  Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser said Louisiana has teamed up with Memphis and Mississippi to highlight artists from the region in an event Thursday night in LA known as “The Night on the River.”

“We’re sharing the cost to highlight all of our Grammy nominees.  Louisiana always leads with more Grammy nominees per capita compared to anywhere,” said Nungesser.

The event takes place tonight at the Clive Davis Theatre at the Grammy Museum and will feature entertainment from various Louisiana performers.  Nungesser said in total, Bayou State artists have 12 nominations this year from various cities across the state.

“Shreveport, Abbeville, New Orleans, Lafayette, Lake Charles, so a wide range of talent represented at the Grammy’s this year.  We couldn’t be more proud,” said Nungesser.

Nungesser said the word Grammy originated from Louisiana.

“The word Grammy was actually named by a lady from Metarie, Louisiana, and she won a contest, a national contest, many many years ago,” said Nungesser.
