(WWL.com) - With the holiday season in effect, the state has seen an uptick in flu cases. This news comes after a horrible flu season last year, with triple the number of hospitalizations and deaths than normal. Flu Bug expert for Louisiana Department of Health Frank Welch said if you have not received a flu shot yet, you need to.

"It looks like the same strains of flu are going to be going around this year.  We have seen a Louisiana uptick in the number of cases, so we want to remind people to go out and get that flu shot," said Welch.

After seeing such a rapid spread of the illness last year, Welch said this year’s swell in cases seems normal.

"This is the time of the year, it tends to get cold, people tend to stay inside and tend to congregate together.  The holidays are happening, so we all tend to get together, so I think this is the normal uptick," said Welch.

Welch said getting the flu shot only doesn’t guarantee that someone won’t get the flu, but if they do get the flu after getting the flu shot, it won’t be so severe.

"For those people who would have been seriously ill, needed a doctor visit, needed a hospital visit or needed to be admitted to the hospital, that flu shot really does provide a huge amount of protection," said Welch.
