Losing religion on Easter?

The Easter weekend begins today with Good Friday observances, and in New Orleans, thousands will go to church today and for Easter Sunday.  However, church membership is down in America with a Gallup poll showing half of American adults don't belong to any religion.

Among Catholics, membership fell sharply from 76 percent to 63 percent. New Orleans Archbishop Gregory Aymond wishes more people went to church, because while you don't have to go to church to be religious, he believes it is important for the community.

''God designed it in such a way that we not only need him, but we also need one another to encourage us,'' Aymond said.

Aymond says while people have the right to avoid going to church, he believes they could make an exception for Easter.

"It's certainly their right not to go, but I would hope they would spend sometime in prayer, I would hope they would go to church for the stations of the cross and the lethargy,'' said Aymond.
