There's nothing like having the King of Carnival drop by for a visit. That's exactly what happened on WWL First News this morning with Tommy Tucker. This year, Rex is 65-year-old Lynes Sloss who goes by his nickname "Poco."

Rex the King of Carnival

Sloss is a self-confessed computer nerd, a pilot, business owner, and he loves New Orleans.

This afternoon, he'll make his first public appearance in-character, to issue his royal proclamation. Then comes his ride down the avenue tomorrow, where he toasts with the mayor at Gallier Hall, then toasts his queen, Miss Sarah Jane Holbrook Freeman, at the Hotel Intercontinental.

''I think it's going to be a spectacularly fun day," Sloss said. "I don't want to make a mistake and hit the points I want to hit."

Even after 35 years in the Rex organization, Sloss said he was stunned at being selected.

"This is going to be the most fun day that I could imagine, excluding my wedding day and when my children were born,'' said Sloss.
