The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office is investigating an in-custody death that occurred earlier today.

At around 1:30 p.m. deputy responded to a business in the 8800 block of Veterans Blvd. in Metairie, near Power Blvd. in reference to a report of a man attacking another man inside a business.  Upon arrival, the deputy located the victim, a 53-year-old man, suffering from multiple bite wounds, including some to his face, and abrasions.  The victim’s 16-year-old son was detained on scene for the attack.

While deputies were arresting the suspect, he remained violent and bit one of the deputies.  The suspect suffered an apparent medical emergency during the arrest and became unresponsive. EMS units transported the suspect to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.  The deputy also required treatment at a hospital for the bite wound.

The Jefferson Parish Coroner’s Office will conduct an autopsy on Tuesday to attempt to determine the cause and manner of death.
