The wife of a Jefferson Parish sergeant has been arrested in her husband's death, after he was found in a bedroom of the home in Waggaman with a gunshot wound to the head, according to Sheriff Joseph Lopinto.

Deputies responded to the couple's home on Camellia Lane on the evening of June 17.

The sheriff says that 35-year-old Shantel Wagner called 911 and reported that her husband had attempted suicide by shooting himself in the head.  Deputies located Sgt. Troy Smith in a bedroom at the location suffering from a single gunshot wound to his head.

Smith was transported to a local hospital, where he eventually died.

Investigators say that through a combination of interviews and forensic evidence processing, probable cause was established that Smith's injury was not self-inflicted.

Homicide investigators identified Wagner as a suspect in Smith's death and secured a warrant for her arrest.  She was located at a residence in the 4900 block of Jean Lafitte earlier this morning and was arrested without incident.

Lieutenant Jason Rivarde said, "Sgt. Troy Smith was employed with JPSO from November 2013 until his death.  He was assigned as an Instructor at our Training Academy.  He was 44 years old."
