A fire at a truck stop just off Highway 11 caused that span to be closed in both directions Thursday afternoon, and had I-10 eastbound traffic backed up for miles.

New Orleans Fire Department photos showed a large fire that appeared to have encompassed the entire building.

NOFD Deputy Chief Robert Eiserloh said the fire at the Irish Bayou Truck Stop and Casino started just before 5 p.m. and quickly went to three alarms.

Firefighters attempting to put out the fire from inside the building were forced to evacuate the structure as the flames grew.

Eiserloh said heavy fire on the first floor forced firefighters to start a defensive attack, "surrounding it and putting a lot of water on it."

The truck stop was open for business when the fire started. All customers and employees apparently evacuated when they saw smoke. No one was injured.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
