Hurricane Dorian is slowly moving away from the northeastern Caribbean Sea, and is forecast to become a dangerous hurricane in a matter of days.

“Given the favorable environment of warm waters and low shear prevailing in the western Atlantic, the NHC forecast calls for a marked intensification, and brings Dorian to category 3 intensity in 72 hours,” said National Hurricane Center Senior Hurricane Specialist Lixion Avila.

The forecast brings the storm up the Atlantic east of the Bahamas, then toward the Florida coast by the ends of the weekend as a Category 3 or stronger hurricane. Landfall could occur anywhere from Miami to Jacksonville Sunday night/early Monday, but that range will narrow over the next several hours.

Residents of the Gulf Coast will also want to keep an eye on this storm and its forecast as it could become a Gulf of Mexico storm after Labor Day weekend.
