A large crowd gathered mid day in downtown New Orleans to demonstrate against proposals to restrict abortions in Louisiana.

Louisiana lawmakers are considering a couple of pro-life proposals this session, including one that would forbid abortions once the fetus has a heartbeat -- typically at six weeks of gestation. Another is a constitutional amendment that states there is no right to abortion in Louisiana.

For those in the pro-choice movement, that's unacceptable.

"I want to protect my own rights, I want to protect the rights of every woman," said one demonstrator.

Another said she was rallying "to make sure that everyone has access to the health care that they need, so that everyone is provided the bodily autonomy that is guaranteed by the constitution."

A handful of counter-protestors held signs indicating the issue to them isn't one of choice, but one of life. But speakers said banning abortion would only mean an end to safely-performed abortions, diving women to seek out unsafe alternatives.
