Today is recognized as the Great American Smokeout, an observation started by the American Cancer Society in 1975 to encourage smokers to kick the habit.

According to a recent report, about 23 percent of adults in Louisiana smoke and Jim Pittman, a spokesman for Louisiana's Smoking Cessation Trust, says he believes the organization is winning in the battle to get smokers to make the effort to quit.

''About 600 people per month are dying in Louisiana due to smoking related illnesses,'' said Pittman, who remains hopeful

''The good thing is that the Smoking Cessation Trust has been averaging 1,200 new enrollees every month.''

Pittman says for those that are looking to quit, the Trust has 95,000 people in its program, and have the resources to help even more quit smoking.
