Today is "Giving Tuesday," the day for people who went shopping from Black Friday through Cyber Monday to spread some holiday cheer to non-profits that help the community.

Michael Williamson, the CEO of the United Way for southeastern Louisiana, says Giving Tuesday really has made a difference.

"Nationally, there's seen a great rise in the number of folks that are giving on Giving Tuesday, and I think that there's been a huge benefit to lots of non profit organizations around the country," said Williamson. Locally, he says the United Way will be calling up the people who have been giving to them year-round, to tell them thanks.

"We actually take the day to spend time to thank all the donors who give to the United Way the other 364 days out of the year," he said. "It offers a great focus on the importance of giving back at a time and season of the year when folks are feeling charitable and generous."

Williamson says the easiest way to support the United Way is to visit their web site, unitedwaysela.org, or follow them on Twitter at twitter.com/unitedwaysela.
