Days of frantic searching in the Tangipahoa River came to a tragic end this morning, with the discovery of the body of a missing a 9-year-old girl.

''It's not the ending we had hoped for and it's truly a nightmare for any family that has to endure this,'' said Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Dawn Panepinto.

Searchers found the body of 9-year-old Gabrielle McCoy around 7:00 a.m., about two miles from where she was last seen during a family outing on Sunday.

Children and adults are being put on notice about dangerous conditions currently on the river.

''The waters are high and the currents are extremely swift, even our divers were having difficulty maintaining their safety in the currents,'' Panepinto said.

Authorities caution parents to be on full alert this summer, be it in rivers, lakes, even in backyard pools.
