Today is National Seat Check Saturday, a chance for parents and caregivers to make sure their child safety seat is installed properly.

Bridget Gardner, a Registered Nurse at University Medical Center New Orleans, says nine locations around the state will be staffed with child passenger safety technicians.

“We will be installing them correctly. Even parents who are trying don’t always get it right and so to have a safety seat is not enough. It has to be properly installed.”

Certified technicians will be available at the locations listed below in Kenner, Covington, Houma, Baton Rouge, Lake Charles, Alexandria, Monroe, Shreveport and Scott.

New laws went into effect August 1st to address safety concerns and Gardner says the updated law is not intended to get parents rushing to put their kids into the front seat.

“We are trying to delay that transition from rear-facing to forward-facing, forward-facing to a booster and children under 13 must be in the rear seat...which we know through research helps to decrease injuries and fatalities.”

Vehicle crashes are the number one cause of child fatalities in Louisiana. A donation program will give preapproved families with child safety seats to lower driving risks. But Gardener says many child seats are never installed correctly.

“To not only provide the seat but to provide the education. In Louisiana, we are at about 94 percent misuse of child safety seats.”

Here are the nine locations.

Walmart in Covington

Rouses Market in Houma

Baton Rouge Police Department headquarters
