Former St. Bernard Parish President David Peralta was found dead in his home today, according to a statement from the parish president's office.

"Parish President Guy McInnis, the St. Bernard Parish Council and Parish Government employees would like to send their condolences to his family and friends," according to the release from McInnis' office.

No further details were immediately available. According to The New Orleans Advocate, no foul play is suspected.

Peralta's term in office proved to be tumultuous, when his estranged wife Sharon Schaefer accused him of spousal abuse and rape, and a grand jury issued a one-count indictment of sexual battery. That charge was later dropped.

At the time, Peralta said he and his wife had engaged in consensual "rough sex."

Then came charges in St. Tammany Parish of Peralta stalking Schaefer, and charges in Baton Rouge of misusing campaign funds. Those cases were also eventually dropped.

Later came charges malfeasance and abuse of office, to which Peralta eventually pleaded no contest, with an agreement to never again run for public office. That was after he was defeated in a re-election bid in 2015 that saw him finish 5th in the primaries.
