There could soon be a new Mardi Gras krewe rolling down the uptown route this Carnival season.

On Monday, former members of the all-female, Mystic Krewe of Nyx, announced they've formed a new Carnival organization, the Krewe of Themis.

Themis is the Greek goddess of justice and one of the 12 Titans in Greek mythology. She is depicted as holding a sword and the scales of justice.

Themis president Kimya Holmes told The Times Picayune | The New Orleans Advocate that the women decided to form their own krewe out of “utter disappointment” with the krewe they paraded with.

Holmes is referring to the #AllLivesMatter post Nyx President Julie Lea posted on the krewe’s official Facebook page.

Some Nyx lieutenants and krewe members viewed the post as a racial retort to the Black Lives Matter movement sweeping the country sparked by the death of George Floyd.

Following the Facebook post, krewe members demanded Lea resign as president of the organization. Lea apologized for the post but refused to resign. That prompted members to withdraw from the carnival krewe. About a dozen krewe members are also suing Lea for a refund of their membership fees.

The Krewe of Themis says it will begin the process to obtain a parade permit with the cityof New Orleans. The Krewe will still have to submit their parade application by January 15 and be approved by the city.
