A federal judge has sentenced former St. Tammany and Washington Parish District Attorney Walter Reed to four years.

The 48 month sentence is far less than the guidelines, which called for a 10 to 12 year sentence.

A federal jury convicted Reed last May of money laundering and fraud charges.

The jury found the former D.A. guilty on 18 of 19 counts against him, including conspiracy, mail and wire fraud, money laundering, and making false statements on his federal income tax returns.

The defense tried to argue that the crimes the government alleged were at worst violations of state ethics laws, not federal crimes. Walter Reed even testified in his own defense. The jury deliberated only a few hours before convicting Reed and his son, Stephen.

Stephen Reed today received a sentence of probation with no restitution and no fines.
