After a career in law enforcment, 48-year-old Gladue 'Joey' Istre is wanted individual facing upgraded charges of first degree rape from a case brought against him in February.

Istre is also being investigated for a number sexual assault allegations in the neighboring parishes, the Times-Picayune/New Orleans Advocate reports.

In February, Istre was booked and bailed out after being charged with second degree rape in St. Bernard Parish.  On Thursday the Grand Jury returned and upgraded indictment, prompting an arrest warrant.

If convicted of first degree rape, with the enhancement of overcoming defensive resistance through force Istre could face mandatory life in prison.

St. Bernard District Attorney Perry Nicosia has recused his office from prosecuting the case; so the State Attorney General has taken over.

Istre served as a Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Deputy from 1985 to 1997.  He also worked with police departments in Westwego and Gretna.

Istre ran unsuccessfully against then-Sheriff Newell Normand in 2011 drawing only nine-percent of the vote.
