Flames lit up the ski for miles early this morning after fire tore through a building housing several businesses and church in New Orleans' Bayou St. John neighborhood.

Listener Louis Angelo Barovechio Jr. was a block away, "The flames were shooting a good four or five stories high."

He says the smoke went even higher.

"A big plume of black smoke," he described seeing from Toulouse Gourmet Catering - where he works overnight.

Listeners reported seeing the flames and smoke from the Causeway, I-10 in Metairie, the Huey P Long Bridge and the Twin Spans.

He says the building looks like an airplane hanger on Toulouse right at the bayou.

Barovechio says the structure houses NOLA Til Ya Die, a clothing and gift shop; Bayou Bicycles and a church.  Canal Furniture Liquidators is also in the building.
