A man suspected of murder tried to escape Orleans Parish Prison Sunday afternoon, according to the sheriff's office. Officials say Kenneth Augustine's attempted jailbreak came to a sudden end when some ceiling tiles gave way.

"As the pod deputy was conducting a security check on the lower level of the pod, inmate Augustine stood on a railing on the mezzanine and pulled himself through a suspended ceiling tile," the sheriff's office said in a news release. "In a matter of seconds, the ceiling tile collapsed approximately two feet from the point where he entered; and inmate Augustine fell to the floor. He received immediate medical attention and was routed to University Medical Center where he is in stable condition."

Authorities say when Augustine is well enough to leave the hospital, he will be placed in a sector of the jail where living conditions are significantly more restricted.

Augustine, who faces two counts of second degree murder, will also be booked with charges pertaining to the attempted escape.
