Evacuation underway in Plaquemines Parish

More than 8,000 people in Plaquemines Parish are now under mandatory evacuation amid fears water in the Mississippi River could overtop the levees.

Homeland Security Director Patrick Harvey says everyone needs to leave the entire Eastbank of Plaquemines Parish and everything from Oakville to Venice.

"Working with our federal and state partners we received information that there is possible overtopping of the river levee."

That, combined with storm surge from the Gulf sets up a potentially dangerous situation.

He says for now they are keeping the floodgate open on Highway 23 in Oakville, but they will shut it at some point.

"It will be sometime Friday afternoon, Friday evening. That will probably be the last gate that we will close here in the parish."
