(WWL.com) - Emerge Louisiana, an organization dedicated to recruiting and training Democratic women to run for office has announced it has seen nine of its alumnae qualify for the 2018 elections. Spokesperson for the organization, Melanie Oubre, says they are seeing candidates that have completed the 70 hours of training run in a wide variety of races.

“Whether it be for the city council of Scott, Louisiana which has a population of 2,000 or for United States Congress and one of the highly talked about congressional districts in the country.”

Oubre says although the candidates may not have name recognition from being career politicians, they do have great cards to play for the campaign.

“They have been present in their communities and have been community leaders for years. Also, politicos in the state may not know their names and backgrounds, but people in their community do and have seen the work that they have put in.”

Oubre says there is a great demand to see women take action in politics.

“Not only on the local level but the national level as well. Women have been giving more money to political campaigns this year than any other year before.”
