The Downtown Development District says New Orleans' downtown area is booming. Last year, permits were issued for over a half a billion dollars for downtown projects.

DDD President Kurt Weigle says this includes hotels, condos, office space and that means more jobs, wealth and tax base boost. He says it's obvious more people want to live downtown.

''Everybody feels welcome here there's something for everybody regardless of price point and it's starting to play out for us,'' said Weigle.

Weigle says a lot of people have gotten rid of their cars.

''They love the walkability of downtown, all the amenities, the restaurants, the galleries and the shopping, it's all right here,'' Weigle said.

Weigle said in 2018 there were downtown construction projects representing 316 individual projects, with projects on Canal Street representing $300,284,483 of the total.

It is a 35 percent increase over 2017's 308 permits that were valued at $419,593,490.
