Louisiana authorities are warning residents not to fall for a scam that's been attempted on several local residents.

"Residents are receiving phone calls from someone claiming their social security number has been flagged and will be cancelled unless they call a certain phone number and provide the requested information. This is a scam!" the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office warns on its Facebook page.  "Please do not provide your social security number or other personal information to anyone over the phone."

Any St. Tammany resident who gets a call like that is asked to call the sheriff's office at (985) 809-8200 or (985) 898-2338.

The Social Security Administration says it does not call citizens for official purposes and any claims to the contrary are lies.
