Former Roman Catholic deacon George Brignac, died on Monday, he was 85 years old.

The Times Picayune | The New Orleans Advocate reports, Brignac’s attorney, Martin Regan, said he was taken to Touro Infirmary from his uptown nursing home, Maison Orleans. He later died at the hospital.

Details on the cause of his death are unknown at this time.

Brignac was awaiting trial on allegations he raped a child in the 1970s and 80s.

In November 2018, Brignac was the only clergyman charged after his name appeared on the Archdiocese of New Orleans’ list of priests and deacons credibly accused of child sex abuse.

One of Brignac’s alleged victims filed a civil lawsuit against Brignac and the Archdiocese.

That lawsuit exposed emails between the archdiocese and the New Orleans Saints. Executives for the Saints said those emails were a result of the organization helping the archdiocese with public relations surrounding the list of accused clergymen.

In 1978 Brignac was acquitted of sexual abuse charges when he was accused of raping three boys at St. Matthew’s in River Ridge. The archdiocese later relocated him to Our Lady of the Holy Rosary church.
