Louisiana had the second highest rate of drownings in the nation from 2013 to 2015 with 71 children dying, according to the state Department of Health. Michelli says instruct children to swim with a partner, never alone. She also adds, keep toys out of the pool area when it’s not in use.

“That’s a temptation to children to reach for it and they may fall in, so remove those toys from in the pool area and around the pool area to make sure that that does not occur.”

Michelli says pool owners should install a fence with locked gate around a pool to keep kids out. She also adds it’s smart for parents to learn CPR and know the signs of drowning.

“Many times a person in distress is calm and quiet under the water and not thrashing about in the water, like what you would see on TV.”
