High humidity coupled with high temperatures are combining to wallop the region with dangerous heat.

Friday’s high was 97, which ties a record, with triple digit head index in the 100s.

"The South and Southwest are caught in the grip of a high heat wave generated by a ridge of high pressure and high pressure at the surface over the northern Gulf are keeping skies mostly clear and preventing the development of clouds that produce thunderstorms," according to WWL-TV Chief Meteorologist Chris Franklin.

Under high pressure, air sinks and compresses. This compression of air leads to a warming of the air. So, highs easily climb into the mid and upper 90s.

Locally, heat will incidences will be in the 105-110° range, or higher.

People who are out doors are strongly advised to take precautions, especially in the afternoon.
