Crime at historic lows in Jefferson but one violent category up compared to last year

Local communities tonight will be taking part in the "night out against crime." It comes as crime has hit some historic lows.

In Jefferson Parish, crime levels are at some of the lowest ever recorded.

"Last year we had under 11,000: 10,900, being the lowest year that we've had to date in 2018. So far in 2019 we're three percent below last year's numbers," said Sheriff Joe Lopinto.

Lopinto says faster police work has helped take some criminals off the street before they can strike again, and the community is more involved than ever, thanks to cheap home security technology and social media.

But one category is outpacing last year's numbers: homicide, with 30 through August of 2019, compared to 17 this time last year. Sheriff Joe Lopinto says the bright side is a case clearance rate of 90 percent.

"In Jefferson parish, we have 90 percent of the 30 murders in 2019 are solved, he said. "Ninety percent is an unbelievable number considering the national average is about 59 percent."

The sheriff said the faster cases get solved, the less they worry about retaliatory killings.
