Rising water on the Mississippi River has the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers considering opening the Bonnet Carre spillway. It would be a record third consecutive year of operating the spillway if that happens.

Current forecasts call for the river to rise to a level of 17.3 feet at the Carrollton gauge by April 11. Typically, levels above 17 feet and a flow rate of more than 1.25 million cubic feet per second are enough to trigger opening the spillway.

Unlike past openings, this one would not be open to the public, due to the coronavirus pandemic and the need to keep people from gathering in large groups.

The Corps will make its decision by Friday.
