The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers today said they are starting the shutdown of the Bonnet Carre spillway. The corps already closed some of the bays on the spillway earlier this month, after determining river flow was beginning to slow down.

"The Spillway’s 13 operation began Feb. 27 and continued for another 26 days. At the Mississippi River’s peak flow 206 bays were open" diverting approximately 1,593,351 gallons (213,000 cubic feet) of water per second, corps officials said.

The Corps of Engineers said that even though they are closing the spillway, the Mississippi River remains elevated, as does their responsibility to protect the region from river flooding.
