New Orleans police say what started as a carjacking left a woman dead.

"Officers responded to a call reporting a carjacking around 8:25 p.m. in the 2400 block of Prentiss Avenue," Public information officers Gary Sheets said in an email.

He says as the carjacker tried to get away, things went from bad to worse.

"As the perpetrator was fleeing in the stolen vehicle, the victim was struck and critically injured. The victim later died at a local hospital as a result of injuries sustained in the incident."

The Major Offense Log explains that the carjacker attacked the woman who was inside the car.

"(He) pulled her out of the vehicle and threw her to the ground... the suspect put the vehicle in reverse and ran over the victim."

Sheets says are they trying to figure out who did this.

"Investigators are currently in the process of gathering evidence and information to identify the person(s) responsible for this incident."

The NOPD is asking for any help the public can provide.

"Homicide Detective Rayell Johnson is leading the ongoing investigation and can be reached at 504-658-5300 with any information regarding this incident. Citizens with information that can help solve a crime are asked to call Crimestoppers at 504-822-1111 or toll-free at 1-877-903-STOP."
