The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development Friday signed a contract with Gilchrist Construction for the new I-10/Loyola Drive interchange in Kenner, including flyover ramps to and from the new terminal at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport.

It's the beginning of a years-long project to build access to the new airport that can bypass lights at I-10 and Loyola and Loyola and Veterans Boulevard.

Construction of the $125.6 million project should begin in spring 2020.

"Signing the Design-Build contract is a significant step in the process of building the project," DoTD Secretary Shawn D. Wilson said. "This allows the contractor to begin design and construction services and starts the clock ticking on completion. This new interchange will be a major step for the New Orleans Airport and community, as millions of individuals utilize this area for their travel needs."

Completion is anticipated in 2022.

Until then, travelers to and from the new terminal will have to negotiate the surface-street traffic between the airport and I-10. The airport is set to open this fall.
