Officials are planning an $800 million liquefied natural gas plant and export terminal at Port Fourchon.

The Greater Lafourche Port Commission and one of the port's tenants, Energy World USA, announced the proposed development Tuesday in a news release.

Officials say the proposed Galliano facility eventually will produce up to 2 million tons of LNG per year for export. It would also operate a separate plant to provide LNG to fuel offshore supply vessels operating in the Gulf of Mexico.

It's reported that the announcement comes as the Houma-Thibodaux area continues to reel from an oil bust that has stripped an estimated 12,000 jobs from the local economy over the past three years.

Chett Chiasson, the port's executive director, says job estimates and a project timeline haven't been finalized.
