Cold weather closes schools

Jefferson and St. John cancel classes

Issues with the heating system at Jefferson Parish schools have forced the closure of all campuses and administration offices Thursday.

"Superintendent Joseph announced that all JPPSS schools and administrative buildings will be closed on Thursday," officials posted. "Due to several consecutive days of freezing temperatures in Jefferson Parish that have taxed the heating systems in its school buildings."

Authorities are concerned with the safety of students amid "frigid temperatures while waiting for the bus."

The superintendent sites the National Weather Service's forecast for frigid temperatures.

Concordia Lutheran school in Marrero will also be closed on Thursday. 

In St. John, the issue is a lack of water pressure.

"Due to the water pressure problems being experienced throughout St. John the Baptist Parish, all St. John the Baptist Parish Public Schools will remain CLOSED on Thursday, Jan. 4," officials posted.

They say, however, maintenance employees and all Lake Pontchartrain Elementary staff should report to work as scheduled.

In Orleans Parish, Bricolage Academy will be closed because of a broken heater. 

Young Audience Charter School will also be closed.
