The Coast Guard is attempting to continue and clean an oily sheen on the Mississippi River that appeared Wednesday afternoon.

Fifteen hundred feet of boom has now been deployed to contain the sheen, just off the moonwalk near the French Quarter.

Six oil spill response boats have been deployed to the area, along with Coast Guard shoreline assessment teams to evaluate the situation and recover the oil on the riverbank.

The Louisiana Oil Spill Coordinator’s Office has joined the response effort.

The cause of the incident remains under investigation.

A Coast Guard helicopter aircrew from Air Station New Orleans first observed a sheen on the water at 4:17 p.m. during a routine overflight.

OMI Environmental Solutions has been contracted to contain and recover the product.

The shoreline is projected to be minimally impacted.
