With severe thunderstorms expected this afternoon and evening, the city of New Orleans today announced it is suspending parking restrictions, allowing residents to park on neutral grounds so long as they don't block streetcar tracks or intersections, to avoid potential flooding.

"Parking restrictions on neutral grounds and sidewalks will be suspended beginning at 12 p.m. today and will remain suspended until 10 a.m. on Friday, April 19," the city announced. "Residents are reminded not to block intersections or streetcar tracks."

Reports of street flooding can be found at the city's streetwise.nola.gov site.

The city urges drivers to use caution if they get caught in torrential downpours, and warns that New Orleans Police will ticket drivers who exceed 5mph on streets with standing water.
