New Orleans wants to position itself as a "smart city." What does that mean? It means using technology to integrate info on everything from sanitation to crime to street lights to  utilities, even detecting the origin of gunfire!

"Interactive, integrated technology into everything from sanitation to crime to street light to gunshot detection, utilities, water, electric, gas, you name it," said political analyst Clancy DuBos of what New Orleans City Council President Jason Williams has in mind.

"One of the reasons New Orleans is so well positioned is because we need to upgrade our technology and our grid anyway, and as long as we're doing it, let's do it with an eye toward using the smart cities approach to integrating all the technologies."

DuBos says some cities in Europe and Asia are already doing this, and it's an opportunity for New Orleans to position itself on the leading edge.

The council's Smart & Sustainable Cities Committee meets this morning at 9:00 a.m. at City Hall.
