Catholic High defeats John Curtis in the 2017 Division I state champoinship

The Catholic High (Baton Rouge) Bears shocked the John Curtis Patriots 20-14 in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome to win the Division I state football championship.

Catholic (11-3) was led by junior quararterback Cameron Dartez, who was a stellar 22-31 for 206 yards and a touchdown.  Dartez also brilliantly orchestrated a 15 play drive in the fourth quarter that led to a Preston Stafford 20 yard field goal that broke a 14-14 tie.

The Bears defense would intercept Patriots quarterback Colin Guggenheim twice in the final 2:21 to seal their second state championship in three seasons.

Guggenheim led the Patriots (11-2) with 121 rushing yards and a touchdown on 19 attempts.  He also went 4/10 through the air for 63 yards, including those two late interceptions.

Bears head coach Gabe Fertitta emotionally embraced former head coach Dale Weiner seconds after the game had ended.  Fertitta replaced Weiner this season, who retired after 30 years as coach at Catholic High.
