Business Report: Stocks finish flat to higher, Lockheed Martin books big Pentagon deal

The Dow Industrials rose 18 points. The Nasdaq Composite edged up 4. The S&P was virtually unchanged.
 
It took about a year longer than expected, but Lockheed Martin has finally booked an $11.5 billion deal with the Pentagon for the next batch of f-35 joint strike fighters. About two-thirds of the 141 new aircraft will go to the U-S military, with the rest slated for international partners or foreign military sales.

he pace of spending by American households remains strong, but it appears to be coming off the highs seen earlier this year. The latest Commerce Department data show … personal-consumption expenditures increased a seasonally adjusted three-tenths percent in August from July.
    
Oil futures surged today on signs of tighter global supplies. November crude jumped $1.13 to settle at $73.25  a barrel.
