Drew Brees is set to return for his 20th NFL season — one he expects will be anything but routine, as the NFL, like the rest of the country, deals with the Covid-19 pandemic.

Because of the coronavirus, the Pro Bowler broke a habit that he's had for much of his playing career.

"So believe it or not, I'm telling you, I've not licked my fingers in 4 months," Brees said. "I used to do it all the time and it was such a habit, right, just turn the page of a book or just to get a little tackiness on the fingers. It was just unconscious."

"But I have consciously broke myself of the habit because of, probably partly because my wife was there to get on me about it," Brees admitted.

Brees said he often licked his fingers before throws, as well as after them, in addition to regular daily tasks, such as reading.

"If I can break myself of the licking the fingers habit, I think that means anybody can break themselves of any habit, because that was out of control how much I was licking my fingers."

One habit the quarterback is not hoping to break is winning, something he and his Saints teammates have done a lot of the past three seasons. The Saints have combined to go 37-11 the past three years and the success New Orleans had on the field is one of the main reasons Brees decided to return after contemplating retirement this offseason.

For the Saints, the goal this season is to win a championship.

"That's why I came back," Brees said before adding. "...I came back for my team and I came back to chase that. And we'll take it one day at a time, one week at a time, but man, I'm going to enjoy every second of this journey and just value every moment."
