Crews have recovered a body from the 17th street canal.

Calls came in this morning of an apparent dead person in the water.  Deputies later pulled a body from the canal near Old Metairie.

"Sheriff Joseph Lopinto reports the recovery of a deceased male in the canal that separates Jefferson and Orleans Parishes," Captain Jason Rivarde said in an email. "JPSO deputies were dispatched to Pumping Station Number 6, near the intersection of Orpheum Avenue and Hyacinth Street, at approximately 9:54 am."

He says the body was observed floating in the canal.

"The remains were recovered around 11:10 am and turned over to the Jefferson Parish Coroner's Office."

Officials are working to determine the identity.

"The remains appeared to be that of a white male."
