Gas prices higher than last year but they've dropped in the last week

The gas price average has declined after nearly 2 weeks of increases.  While they are up from last year, they've dropped about 3 cents statewide from just a week ago.

"Looking at prices right now this year about 44 cents higher than we were paying this time last year," AAA's Don Redman said.  "It's a volatile market and much of it depends on the news of the day."

But we've caught a break.  Even Hurricane Michael didn't affect gas prices much.

Still, those slightly higher prices are good for Louisiana, and other energy states.

"We've seen the rig count over 120 versus last year so that means more exploration, more jobs and potentially more revenue for the state, as well," he said.

The current average in Louisiana is $2.64 a gallon.  National average is $2.88.
