50th Anniversary Jazz Fest adds extra day

The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and Foundation, Inc. is adding an extra day to the 2019 Jazz Fest.

The new day will be a “Locals Thursday”, April 25, 2019. On that day, anyone with a valid Louisiana ID will be allowed to purchase up to two discount tickets at the gate for just $50. The new day is being added as part of the 50th anniversary Jazz Fest. The Festival Music Lineup will be announced this December.

This year's fest will run Thursday through Sunday both weekend of the festival the last weekend in April and the first weekend in May.

Organizers have not announced the lineup for the 50th Jazz Fest, but say they will release the musical acts next month.

The rumor mill is full of huge name acts, but so far nothing official has been released.

Officials did release a video of the announcement of the first Jazz Fest as they begin the celebration of the 50th festival.

A Friday press release announced:

"Producers of the 50th anniversary Jazz Fest have decided to mark the milestone event with something special: the addition of another day of the signature festival celebrating New Orleans music and culture.  Thursday, April 25 will now be the opening day of the 2019 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival presented by Shell.  Both of the event’s weekends will run Thursday through Sunday, April 25 – 28 and May 2 – 5.

The Festival also announced that the new day will be “Locals Thursday,” which allows anyone with a valid Louisiana ID to purchase up to two discount tickets at the gate on that day.  “Locals Thursday” discount tickets will again be only $50.

The lineup for the 50th anniversary Festival and ticketing information will be released in December.  Started in 1970, Jazz Fest annually celebrates the unique culture of New Orleans and the region drawing fans from around the country and around the world.

In celebration of the 50 years of Jazz Fest, today the Festival begins a weekly look back at the people, places and things that have helped make the event part of the culture it presents.  Fans can look forward to seeing footage from the first Jazz Fest, images of Festival favorites through the years and much more.  Look for Jazz Fest Memories and #JazzFest50 social media posts on most social media platforms.
